NC Archives Online - Search the online MARS catalog to find documents available via North Carolina Archives in Raleigh. You can request copies of the documents from Archives for a nominal fee, and in some cases, the documents are available for viewing online.

The Kellenberger Room - (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) The Kellenberger Room at Craven Regional Library is the genealogy and regional history research room at the New Bern Library. Under the direction of Victor T. Jones, the Kellenberger Room has an extensive collection of family histories, Bible records, microfilm/microfiche, and thousands of books full of all sorts of genealogical data (Birth, Marriage, Death, Wills, Probate, Estates, Apprenticeships, Guardians, Court, Bastardy Bonds, Military Records & much more). There is also an extensive online collection that will help anyone with roots in eastern North Carolina, particularly in the area around Craven County.

Coastal Carolina Indian Center - If you have Indian ancestry from eastern North Carolina, or you've heard you may, then this is a site you'll want to visit. The Research Databases are chock-full of information on everything from archaeology and history to genealogy.

Eastern North Carolina Digital Library - This site, created and maintained by East Carolina University, features a wonderful collection of very old, out-of-print books relating to the state of North Carolina. Some are pure history, others fiction, some particularly useful for genealogists. There are hundreds of books worth browsing on the site, but to give you an idea of what's available, we recommend:

Books on Google.com - Every day, Google is adding dozens of out-of-print and hard-to-find books to it's online virtual library. Older books that are now past their copyright protection can be found in their entirety online. Go to books.google.com and search for the specific county you are looking for, then choose "Full Preview" at the top of the page. Those are books that you can read, search and even download, in their entirety, online. Some of the books available include the Colonial and State Records of North Carolina (first series), as well as numerous history books, county books and family history books!

Notes from this researcher: My brick wall comes with my great great grandfather's generation, none of whom seemed to find any value in written records. There seem to be two Christopher Dudleys in that generation, one related to Gov. Edward Dudley, and the other? The records have been very hard to find, if any exist. My ancestor was born in Onslow County, probably lived in Jacksonville, but decided to move to Wilmington to practice his trade, harness-making. He served in the Civil War, and after that, disappears from the records. He married a woman called Louisa, surname unknown at this point, and they had two children we know of: Stephen Byron Dudley and Martha Dudley. Stephen married the redoubtable Capitola Beatrice Wood, and they had six children, of whom my grandfather, Edwin P. Dudley, was the oldest. Does anyone read anything here that reminds of long-ago
encounters? If you've encountered this family, please let me know. (

Notes from this researcher: Great Grandfather was James A. Meadows. His father was Job, mother Mary? One of James sons was George Harvey, my grandfather. My father was Harvey Meadows. James A. also had a son James? None of the Jobs in Jones county seem to connect to our family. This is my brick wall. Please e-mail with information. (E-mail)

Ancestry.com - This subscription-based website will offer you access into millions of historical records collections from not only eastern North Carolina, but around the world. If you cannot access Ancestry.com at your local library, then a subscription to this site is a must if you're serious about filling in the blanks of your family tree.

Rootsweb.com - Although relying on family tree information from the Rootsweb WorldTree probably isn't a good idea, it is a wonderful place to search if you're looking for information on specific ancestors that someone may have already done extensive work on. One of the most useful features of Rootsweb are the Message Boards focused on specific areas or surnames.
