Family Trees

With your help, we're hoping to create a giant, FREE, family tree database on EastCarolinaRoots.com, which will help folks from Eastern North Carolina search for specific relatives, or information about relatives, by taking advantage of Google-driven search abilities.

This means once our family tree database is in place, you will be able to do a Google search for your ancestor across this entire site, and whether your ancestor is a PART of someone's tree, or whether they are simply mentioned as a witness or somehow in notes on someone's tree, the corresponding page will come up in search results!

To submit your tree, please save the tree in GEDCOM format (compress it into a ZIP file if the GEDCOM is more than 5MB) and e-mail it to the site administrator. (GEDCOM files are standard Genealogical information database files that can be created by virtually any family tree software. There are also some online sites that will allow you to create a GEDCOM file if you plug data into their website. Do a search on Google for software that will let you create a GEDCOM from your family tree data.)

If you already have a family tree on Rootsweb or Ancestry.com, you may wonder, "Why bother submitting my tree to East CarolinaRoots?"

Well, there's a very good reason.

Rootsweb is an enormous database of people from all over the world, and it is a good help for people trying to fill in blanks on their family tree-- provided you ALWAYS double-check the facts in some form or fashion. It's limitations, however, are that when you search for someone in Rootsweb's tree database, you are only able to search for an individual who is a part of someone's tree. There is no way for Rootsweb to allow you to search the notes and sources of someone's tree. Perhaps you do not descend from an individual on a certain person's family tree, but one of your ancestors DID witness a deed on a particular day-- and that is in the notes on their tree. That might be a clue to help you establish that someone was alive at a particular time, or even that they had a connection to a family that you previously had no idea about, but Rootsweb does not search the notes and sources on people's trees. There are so many ways this can be helpful, we could write a book on it! Bottom line:

EastCarolinaRoots search will allow you to find your ancestors in any portion of this site, even if they only appear in the notes of someone else's ancestor but not as an actual branch on their tree. We're harnessing Google-search engine power to make this happen. (Hopefully, we'll have enough trees uploaded and all of the technology in place by January of 2008 that everyone can start test-driving it to see how great it truly is!)

BEFORE YOU SUBMIT YOUR TREE, YOU MUST AGREE TO THESE GUIDELINES:

1) You are responsible for the content of your online family tree. Please do not break copyright laws or use information from other individuals family trees or websites without their permission. EastCarolinaRoots will not be liable or responsible for any copyright infringements from family trees submitted to this site.

2) Please try to include notes and/or sources for all familial relationships. Basing your family tree relationships solely on something you've found on the Rootsweb family tree database or Ancestry.com's OneWorldTree is NOT dependable information without fact-checking and verifying all of the family relationship claims that are being made. If you aren't sure about a family relationship, you can include it, but please state it somewhere in the notes for that individual that you are not sure about that connection, but it is based on the best information you currently have.

3) If you have a preference as to who is set as the root person of your tree, please specify who that should be in the e-mail that you use to submit the tree.

4) By submitting your tree, you are giving East Carolina Roots unrestricted permission to publish the tree on the EastCarolinaRoots.com/EastCarolinaRoots.org website until such time that you request the tree be deleted from the database. If at any time you wish to have your tree removed from the site, just send us an e-mail requesting such, and we will have it deleted with in 3 business days.

If you agree to the above, please click here to submit your tree.
