The following was printed in the February 2005 edition of Pitt County Genealogical Quarterly journal. It was abstracted and contributed to that publication by Roger Kammerer. This, and other issues of the journal, may be found at the Internet Archive.

1786 Swift Creek Tax List

The following is a list of taxables from the Swift Creek area of Craven County in 1786, much of which later became a part of Pitt County. The list is found in the Treasurer’s and Comptroller’s Papers, County Settlements with the State, Settlements of Individuals, Craven County, Box 9; NC Archives, Raleigh, NC. It seems that this tax list was torn into tiny strips and grouped by alphabet into different files. It is unknown if the list is complete or if there are other districts mixed in.

Abstracted and contributed by Roger Kammerer.

First of all, you have a great site or blog or whatever this is called. Not too up on all this modern computer stuff. My 40 + years in genealogy have been spent working mainly with books or primary source records, but I see your contributions online often. Seems to be very well researched and accurate.
Never heard of this 1786 Swift Creek (Craven County) tax list before. I am not sure by what you and Roger mean that this list was “torn into tiny strips and grouped by alphabet into different files.” How do you know that this is all one list then? Did it have some type of heading on all the different pieces that told you that? Please explain more fully. Thanks for all the great info you have put out in the past and have a wonderful day.
