Anyone know what the relationship of Jesse Pumphrey to Abner Smith is?

Quote from Sara Whitford on May 8, 2019, 12:13 pmI just found an 1817 deed in which Jesse Pumphrey "for love and good will" gives all of his property to Abner Smith upon his death.
I doubt he's a grandson because it seems likely he would leave his whole estate to just one child and most people had more than one grandchild — especially in those days. Is he is son? Or perhaps Jesse had no children of his own and married Abner's mother?
I've not spent much time researching the Smiths and I've definitely spent ZERO time researching the Pumpreys so any responses are welcome.
