I descend from this couple three times.

On my mother's side, my 2nd great-grandfather was Albert L. Gatlin (1875-1939), son of Alfred Gatlin (1852-1920) and Emily Augusta Lathinghouse.  Alfred's parents were Stephen Gatlin (1815-bef. 1870) and Martha "Patsy" Gaskins and Stephen's were Shadrack Gatlin (1790-1832) and Margaret Gardner.  Shadrack was the second son of John Gatlin (1750-1811) and Esther Tingle.

And on my father's side, my 2nd great-grandmother was Melissa Katherine Rowe Lewis (1880-1940), daughter of Noah D. Rowe (1843-1914) and Hannah C. Bland (1847-1908).  Noah was the son of John Gatlin Rowe (1826-1866) and Lucretia Dixon and Hannah the daughter of Thomas Bland and Catharine Rowe (1820-bef. 1870).  John was the son of Shadrack Rowe and Holland Gatlin (1793-aft. 1870) and Catharine the daughter of Jeremiah Rowe and Mills Gatlin (1788-bef. 1850).  Both Holland and Mills were daughters of John Gatlin and Esther Tingle.  John and Esther also had a son named Abner and at least two other children.

Most researchers equate this John Gatlin with John Black Gatlin, son of Captain Edward Gatlin (1739-1781) and Elizabeth Johnson, but I don't think so.  I think that he was the son of either Edward Gatlin (1694-1763) or his son of the same name  (born abt. 1730) and Elizabeth Reel.  These are the children I have for Elizabeth Reel and her Gatlin husband:

  • James Gatlin (1745-?) married Mary Searles 11 February 1784
  • John Gatlin (1750-1811) married Esther Tingle 6 January 1784
  • Joshua Gatlin (1752-bef. 1818) married Sarah Banks 11 October 1783
  • Sarah Gatlin (1760-?) married Evan Thomas 6 October 1782

There were, probably, others.  Can I prove that he was the son of Edward Gatlin and Elizabeth Reel?  No.

I've wondered if the Mary Gatlin who died in 1816 is connected to this line and, maybe, Elijah Gatlin.  And there's the ever mysterious Ephraim Gatlin (bef. 1775-bef. Dec 1816).  I have no idea who this Ephraim was, but Esther, Abner, Mills, and Shadrack sold the land he patented in 1799 that came to them "through a legal decent" to Shadrack Rowe.  What legal decent would include Esther being an inheritrix, I don't know.
