My dad's family is from Vanceboro, North Carolina.

They grew up with their parents [Boss & Maude Bryan], and knew their maternal grandmother [Bettie Elizabeth Gatlin (March 1, 1882 to March 21, 1942)] and maternal great grandparents [William Henry Gatlin (April 15, 1843 to August 23, 1944) & Prussa Ann "Puss" Peterson Gatlin (Oct 15, 1940 to May 19, 1928)], but not their maternal grandfather.

My grandmother:

Maude Lena Gatlin (18 Sep 1898 - 28 Sep 1963)

My grandmother's brother:

Bruce Beacher Gatlin (29 Dec 1902 - 27 May 1963)

Maude went to Eastern Carolina Teachers Training School (or ECTTS, later ECTC, which eventually became ECU) and graduated in 1917.

Maude bought a farm on February 9, 1918 from L.E. Smith and his wife Lydia C. Smith for $100. Her father possibly gave her the farm or the money to buy it.

She bought another farm on April 27, 1950 from William C. & Carrie Lee McVickers
(who had bought it from W.L. Ipock & wife Davie Ipock) for $10 and "other good and valuable considerations."

She taught school at Maul Swamp Road school, a one room school house. Teachers stopped teaching once they got married or had kids, so they could attend to their family. So, Maude didn’t teach long because she was married in 1920 and had her first child in 1921. Later in life, Maude was the cafeteria manager at Farm Life school.

A few years ago I met my grandmother's brother's family. They said my grandmother's father's family name was possibly Stokes.
Mr. Stokes was a member of (Junior Order) United American Mechanics & helped one of them get into a boarding school.

Hello, Anthony.

I don't know how much help I'll be, but this is what I've found.  Maude Lena Bryan's death certificate gives her parents as William Gatlin and Bettie Gatlin and Bettie's gives her husband as William Gatlin.  Bruce's says his parents were William Henry Gatlin and Elizabeth Peterson.  The informants were Frederick B. Bryan, Mrs. J. R. Bryan (Maude) and Mrs, Bruce B. Gatlin, respectively.  I have not found Bettie in either the 1910 or 1920 censuses.  In 1900, she and Maude are living with William Henry and Prussia Gatlin and in 1930 and 1940 she's living with Bruce.  She's listed as being single in 1900. Nor have I found a marriage record.  If Maude's father really was a Stokes, then Bettie was not married to him that I've been able to find.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I'm not giving up quite yet.

Thanks Becky!

Yes, that's what I've been able to find and what my family remembers.

Would a DNA test find relatives, or is this too far back?

Is there to way to find a Stokes male of childbearing age around the Vanceboro area?

I think my family has always assumed my grandmother's father must have been well off because her mother's family was poor yet she went to teacher's school (East Carolina) and was also able to buy her first property.

Okay, I found a Stokes family in Vanceboro around 1900, that of Richard Blount Stokes (1849-1910).  It would be a place to start, at any rate.

Hi Tee, I think I added you on Facebook at some point.

I've met your uncle, and would stop & see Alma Gatlin when I was in North Carolina.

I'd love to hear more about the Gatlin side of my family. Feel free to email me at my username at gmail. Or contact me on Facebook.
