The following items are from the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Craven County, North Carolina.
In short, James Roach was the father of Charles and David Roach of Craven County. His wife, and the mother of Charles and David, was Katherine Johnson, sister of Jacob Johnson. After James’ death in 1745, Katherine married Thomas Swaffer. I don’t believe Katherine and Thomas Swaffer had any children together, as when Thomas Swaffer dies in 1778, his estate was minimal and was administered by Charles Roach, Katherine’s son by her previous husband, James Roach.

[8] Paid an Account of the sales of the Estate of James ROCHE Deceased was exhibitted in Court on oath of Gerral (Garrett) JOHNSON (appointed vendue Master for that Purpose) and Ordered to be filed.
[16] issd. Ordered that a Summons issue against Thomas SWAFFER & Exrs & Exx. of Jas. ROACHE Decd. to appear at the next court to Render an account of the Sales of the Estate of James ROCHE (sic) Deceased.

[76] 2/Pd. A Deed of Sale from Hardy BRYAN to Thomas SWAFFER for 185 acres of Land in Craven County was Proved in Open Court by the Oath of Jacob Johnston. Evidence thereto which was ordered to be Registered.

[116] Robert COULAHAN came into court and moved for Leave to keep an Ordinary at his Now Dwelling House which on his giving security of John GATLIN Jun. and Thos. SWAFFER according to Law the same is Granted.
[117] A Deed of Sale from Thomas SWAFFER to William NELSON for 185 acres of Land in Craven County was acknowledged in Open Court by the said Thomas SWAFFER Let it be Registred.
[121] Ordered that Thomas SWAFFER who was returned a Grand Juror to this court by the Sheriff be fined Five Pounds Proclamation Money Nisi Causa for refusing to qualify himself to serve on the said Jury and that he have till to Morrow night to make it appear to this court that he is of the Profession of Quakers or the said Fine to be final.

[126] Whereas Thomas SWAFFER who was returned to this Court as a Juror hath been fined Five pounds proclamation money Nisi Causa for refusing to Qualify with time to make it appear to the Court that he is of the Profession called Quakers and having failed therein It is therefore ordered that the said Feine (sic) be final and that the Sheriff Levy the said Feine on the Goods & Chattals of the said Thos. Swaffer and for the Fees accruing hereon accordingly.
